It was a question that my sister in law asked as we were walking along the beach after seeing a young girl with obvious marks. And one I didn’t know how to answer. I am a DSL, a teacher, tutor and boarding house mistress who has done several ( well 13 days in total) courses but I struggled to answer…… because I am not an expert. I am a teacher.
Alright I am passionate about helping students and have experience of helping students….. get the help that they need but I am rarely the one who helps them. I listen, non judgementally and I give every leaflet, support and web site that I can find to help them but I am not the one who delivers the specific help that they need like CBT and therefore I rarely know what the reasons are. I have read every book I can lay my hands on to help but we all know a book is nothing without experience and my experience is limited to the pupils that I have come across and referred to CAMH. These include those that are seeing CAMH after being in hospital for a few weeks and have a plan for school and those that haven’t met the threshold and therefore are seeing our counsellor but we are a little nervous about the fact that they should be getting more support. Students who self harm on their arms, inner thighs and the back of their neck. Students who cut, burn, pull their hair, over exercise, under or over eat and those that are sexually promiscuous. But still I don’t think I have enough experience to answer this question as I am just a teacher.
